Frequently Asked Questions

The chapter's membership consists of 75 per cent Professional Members and 25 per cent Associate Members.
Professional members. We currently have about 240 members and growing.

Professional Membership is open to facility practitioners and educators, whose primary responsibilities are to provide,
oversee, or teach any facility functions. operations and maintenance, planning and project management, real estate, etc.

Associate Membership is open to individuals whose primary responsibilities include: business development; sales
and/or marketing as a consultant; representation of a manufacturer, vendor, dealer, distributor; and/or provider of
facility-related products and services.

Can firms offering products  and services to the facility management profession promote their
capabilities to chapter members?

A major benefit of IFMA is the opportunity to network at chapter programs. Firms offering services and products can
suggest topics of interest to the facility management field as monthly general membership programs by contacting the
membership committee. They can also prepare similar type articles or provide sponsorship for the Chapter's Newsletter
or Web Site. Contact a Board Member for more information
here.

What is the difference between IFMA and other facility-related associations?

Many IFMA members also belong to other similar organizations, and primarily benefit in diverse networking opportunities
each affords. Each group has its own niche and mission but have commonalities. They all have programs of interest to
facility Managers. The main reason to choose IFMA is that we are such a diverse bunch and facilities management is
often defined in a myriad of ways.

Many IFMA members are also members of BOMA, CoreNet, IREM and other groups and vice versa. Our Chapter regularly
hosts joint programs with these other organizations. So, what is the difference between the groups? All have professional
and associate member categories. One can see the different focus of the groups by looking at the make-up of their
professional members.

A significant number of IFMA professional members are facility manager for owners who are not in the facilities business,
such as DTE Energy and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. IFMA limits itself to a maximum of 25% of associate
members.

BOMA (Building Owners and Managers Association) identifies itself as a professional trade association whose members
either own or manage commercial real estate (for profit), or provide goods and services to the industry.  Their members
typically work for property management firms who contract their services to multiple building owners, such as Trammell
Crow, Schostak Brothers & Company and Grubb & Ellis Management Services.

CoreNet Global Corporate Real Estate Network considers itself the world's premier association for corporate real estate
and related professionals.  CoreNet Global was created from the integration of the former International Development
Research Council (IDRC) and The International Association of Corporate Real Estate Executives (NACORE
International), which joined forces on May 1, 2002. A typical CoreNet member is a real estate professional with a
corporation or a commercial property management firm.

The Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM), an affiliate of the National Association of Realtors, is an association of
property and asset managers.  A commercial or multi-family property management firm employs a typical IREM member.
They offer certification program that includes CPM, Certified Property Manager; and ARM, Accredited Residential Manager.
